Alfred Hitchcock was an English film director and producer most notable for his work in Shadow of a Doubt (1943), Strangers on a Train (1951), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) and Rear Window (1954) to name just a few. Likewise, he is also widely known for his American anthology series, 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents' (1962 -1965), which featured dramas, thrillers, and mysteries. The series was voted on of "The 100 Best TV shows of ALL_TIME". Although he was most recognized for his writing and directing he was also fond of making cameo appearances where as a recurring theme he would carry a musical instrument. He made cameo appearances in 39 of his 52 surviving films (1).
Of all his works the movie Psycho (1960) reigns as his most well known. The screenplay was written by Joseph Stefano and based on a book with the same name that was written by Robert Bloch. The plot was loosely inspired by the crimes of Ed Gein. Ed Gein is known for exhuming corpses from graveyards and making trophies from their bones and skin. The film depicts the meeting of a secretary who goes to a secluded motel after embezzling money from her employer and the motel's disturbed owner. The films follows the deadly aftermath of their encounter.
Psycho was named one of the 100 'Best American Movies of all Time' and was nominated for four Academy Awards. It was remade in 1998 and has had two sequels and a prequel. In 1992 the film was selected to be preserved by the Library of Congress at the National Film Registry.
In 1990 a book "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho" was published that details every aspect of the making of Psycho. Stephen Rebello, the author, researched the film thoroughly through Hitchcock's personal records and archives and he interviewed virtually every surviving cast and crew member.
The book, 'Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho', has been adapted in a film 'Hitchcock' (2013) with Anthony Hopkins cast in the role of Alfred Hitchcock. Other cast members include, Scarlett Johansson, Helen Mirren, Ralph Macchio and Jessica Biel to name a few.
Being a huge fan of Anthony Hopkins, Hitchcock and the film Psycho it would be an understatement to say that I am excited about this movie. I believe that it will be highly interesting to see exactly how Hitchcock was able to produce such an epic story that is still highly regarded as an outstanding bit of American film history. Not to mention a groundbreaking stepping stone for all new films of the horror genre.
I plan to read this book prior to the release of this film. I am looking forward to learning how despite his lack of access to the modern technology Hitchcock brought terror and sincere fright to the American population. His depiction has changed the way modern people regard the horror genre.
I foresee this film hitting the charts at full force and I applaud the film industry for making this film and Hitchcock current.
